Wigs 101: 4 In-Depth Tips for Purchasing Your First Wig

Getting Started With Wigs

Deciding to wear a wig, no matter what the reason, can be overwhelming. There’s so much to understand, know, and learn about wigs, it can be difficult to know where to start. You can definitely fall into the rabbit hole when trying to find wig information and you will continue to learn more and more as you progress through your wig journey. Still, knowing the basics of where to start can make that journey easier, more enjoyable, and save you precious time and money.

Let’s start the step-by-step roadmap to help you decide which wig to purchase all the way to putting it on and wearing it out!

Step #1: Choosing Your Wig

There are several questions you will need to ask yourself to narrow down the immense wig selection that’s available. I have a basic video exploring these questions, as well as one where I go more in depth, but let’s get started exploring what you want and need now. Grab a piece of paper or open your notes app and answer the following questions for yourself.

  • What is the price range you are willing to spend on a wig?

  • Do you want synthetic, heat-friendly, human hair or do you have no preference?

  • Do you have the time and/or the desire to style a wig or would you prefer a more "put on & go" option?

  • What are your preferences when it comes to hair style, texture, length, and color?

  • What is your comfort level with not only putting on a wig, but also wearing it out in public?

Depending on how you answer these questions, it will determine what type of wig you are looking for. Don’t worry if you aren’t quite sure how to answer each question or change your mind as you move through the process.

Step #2: Proper Wig Care

Regular maintenance is crucial to keep your wig looking its best. Brush your wig gently with a wide-tooth comb or a wig brush to prevent tangling. Wash your wig with specialized wig shampoo and conditioner, following the manufacturer's instructions. Allow it to air dry on a wig stand to maintain its shape and prevent damage from heat styling. Here's a more detailed breakdown of how to care for your wig:

1. Brushing and Detangling: Before washing your wig, gently brush out any tangles or knots using a wide-tooth comb or a wig brush designed specifically for synthetic or human hair wigs. Start from the ends and work your way up to the roots to avoid causing damage or shedding. Be gentle, especially with synthetic wigs, as excessive pulling or tugging can stretch or break the fibers.

2. Washing Your Wig: Depending on how often you wear your wig and your lifestyle, you'll need to wash it regularly to remove dirt, oil, and styling product buildup. Follow these steps to wash your wig effectively:

  • Fill a basin or sink with lukewarm water and add a small amount of wig shampoo. Swirl the water to create a gentle lather.
  • Submerge the wig in the water and gently swish it around, ensuring that the entire wig is soaked.
  • Avoid rubbing or wringing the wig, as this can cause tangling or damage.
  • Rinse the wig thoroughly with clean, lukewarm water until all shampoo residue is removed.

3. Conditioning: After shampooing, apply a small amount of wig conditioner, focusing on the mid-lengths and ends of the hair. Avoid applying conditioner to the roots or base of the wig, as this can weigh it down or cause slippage. Leave the conditioner on for a few minutes to soften the fibers and improve manageability, then rinse it out thoroughly with lukewarm water.

4. Drying Your Wig: To dry your wig, gently blot excess water with a clean towel without rubbing or squeezing. Place the wig on a wig stand or mannequin head to air dry naturally. Avoid using heat sources such as hair dryers or direct sunlight, as excessive heat can damage synthetic fibers or cause human hair to become brittle. Allow the wig to dry completely before styling or wearing it again.

5. Styling and Maintenance: Once your wig is dry, you can style it as desired using heat tools, rollers, or styling products. However, be mindful of the recommended heat settings, and avoid using excessive heat when necessary by using cooler tools to prevent damage.

Step #3: Secure Your Wig

Ensure your wig stays in place throughout the day by using wig clips, tape, or adhesive. Wig caps can also provide a secure base and prevent slippage. Experiment with different methods to find what works best for you, considering factors such as activity level and climate. Here's a more detailed breakdown of how to secure your wig as well as multiple options:

1. Wig Grips: Wig grips, also known as wig bands, are accessories designed to keep wigs securely in place without the need for clips, tape, or adhesive. They are especially useful for individuals with sensitive skin or hair loss conditions who may find traditional wig attachment methods uncomfortable or impractical. Here's how to use a wig cap:

  • Place the wig grip around your head, positioning it where you want the wig's front edge to sit.
  • Adjust the tightness of the wig grip to achieve a snug but comfortable fit. It should feel secure without being too tight or restrictive.
  • Once the wig grip is in place, put on your wig as usual, ensuring that the front edge aligns with the edge of the wig grip.
  • Gently adjust the position of the wig as needed to ensure a seamless and natural-looking fit.

*One of our favorite wig grips is a 2-in-1 wig grip and cap! It's easy, comfortable, and lasts a long time.

2. Wig Clips: Wig clips are small comb-like attachments that can be sewn into the inside of your wig. They grip onto your natural hair or wig cap to keep the wig securely in place. To use wig clips effectively:

    • Section your natural hair or wig cap where you want to place the clips.
    • Sew the clips onto the wig cap, making sure they are evenly spaced and aligned with the corresponding sections of your head.
    • Once the clips are securely attached, snap them open and slide them into your natural hair or wig cap, then snap them closed to secure the wig in place.
    3. Adhesive: Wig adhesive, also known as wig glue or tape, can provide a more secure hold, especially for lace front wigs or full lace wigs. Here's how to use wig adhesive:
    • Cleanse your skin along the hairline with an alcohol wipe to remove any oils or residue.
    • Apply a thin layer of adhesive along your hairline, following the manufacturer's instructions for the specific product you're using.
    • Wait for the adhesive to become tacky (usually about 5-10 minutes) before applying the wig.
    • Carefully place the wig onto your head, starting from the front and working your way back. Press the wig firmly into the adhesive to ensure a secure bond.

    4. Wig Tape: Wig tape is another option for securing your wig, particularly for temporary wear. It comes in strips or rolls and provides a strong hold without the mess of liquid adhesive. To use wig tape:

    • Cut the tape into small strips or sections, depending on your preference and the design of your wig.
    • Peel off the backing from one side of the tape and apply it to the inside of the wig cap along the hairline or perimeter.
    • Once all the tape strips are in place, remove the backing from the other side to expose the adhesive.
    • Carefully position the wig on your head, pressing it firmly onto the tape to secure it in place.

    5. Wig Caps: Wig caps serve as a base for your wig and can help keep it in place, especially if you have short or fine hair. Here's how to use a wig cap:

    • Pull your hair back and secure it with bobby pins or a hair tie.
    • Put on the wig cap, ensuring it covers all of your natural hair and sits snugly on your head.
    • Tuck any stray hairs or edges of the wig cap under the cap to create a smooth surface for the wig to sit on.

      Step #4: Style with Caution

Wigs can be styled in a variety of ways. However, you need to be cautious to not cause damage to the synthetic fibers or human hair. Here's a more detailed breakdown of how to cautiously style your wig:

      1. Understanding Wig Materials: Before styling your wig, it's essential to understand the materials it's made of. Synthetic wigs are typically pre-styled and may have specific limitations when it comes to heat styling. Human hair wigs offer more versatility and can withstand heat styling to a certain extent, similar to natural hair. Always check the manufacturer's recommendations and guidelines for your specific wig to avoid damaging it.

      2. Non-Heat Styling Methods: If you're concerned about using heat styling tools or if your wig is not heat-resistant, there are plenty of non-heat styling methods you can use to change up your look:

      • Rollers and curlers: Velcro rollers, foam rollers, or flexi rods can create curls and waves without heat. Simply wrap sections of hair around the rollers and leave them in place until the hair is dry or set.
      • Braiding and twisting: Braiding or twisting sections of hair while damp can create texture and waves when the hair is dry. Experiment with different braiding techniques, such as French braids or Dutch braids, to achieve different looks.
      • Hair accessories: Accessories like headbands, scarves, and hair clips can add flair to your wig without the need for heat styling. Get creative with different styles and placements to change up your look effortlessly.

      3. Styling Products: Using the right styling products can help enhance and maintain your wig's style without damaging the fibers. Look for products specifically designed for synthetic wigs, such as wig wax, styling spray, shaping cremes, or serum. Avoid products containing alcohol or harsh chemicals, as these can dry out the hair and cause damage over time.

      4. Consult a Professional: If you're unsure about how to style your wig or if you want a more complex hairstyle, consider consulting a professional wig stylist. They can provide expert advice and assistance, ensuring that your wig looks its best without risking damage.
